What is Prevacid?

Prevacid is used to treat ulcers, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition caused by the backflow of stomach acid that causes heartburn and injury of the esophagus, and conditions where the stomach produces too much acid, including Zollinger- Ellison. Prevacid is used in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori, the bacterium that causes ulcers. This medication belongs to a class called proton-pump inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced by the stomach.

How to use Prevacid medication?

Prevacid comes as a delayed-release capsules (long-acting) and granules to mix in a slow-release liquid to take by mouth. Prevacid is usually taken once daily before eating. When taken in combination with other medications to eliminate H. pylori, Prevacid medication is taken twice a day (12 hours) or three times a day (every 8 hours) for at least 10 to 14 days. To help you to remember to take medication, take it at the same time every day. Follow the directions on the prescription label and ask your doctor or pharmacist if you do not understand. Use the medication exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often if prescribed by your doctor.
The Prevacid capsules should be swallowed whole. If you have trouble taking the medicine, add the contents of a capsule into applesauce, pudding, cottage cheese, yogurt or mashed pears and eat the medicine immediately. The granules should not be chewed or crushed. The capsule contents can also be mixed with 2 ounces of orange juice or tomato juice, and taken immediately. Rinse the left in the glass with the rest of the juice and drink immediately.
For patients who have a nasogastric tube, capsules and granules can be mixed with 40 ml of apple juice. The mixture should be injected through the nasogastric tube in the stomach. Then the tube should be rinsed with more apple juice.
To use the oral drug solution, empty the contents of a package in a container with 2 tablespoons water. Shake well and drink the mixture immediately. If there are pellets, add water, shake well and drink immediately. Do not use or drink anything except water. Do not crush or chew the granules.
